Conservative responses to the partial disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent appearance of former President Clinton and other Democrats in images, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship portray Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.
Administration Defends Censorship with Strong Rhetoric
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a detailed letter outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Prompted by Redactions
While Trump's name and image are visible in some of the documents, the widespread redactions prompt significant concerns about the information may be concealed beneath them. Some conservative lawmakers immediately demanded increased openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the law, and suggested that a subsequent Congress may attempt to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly fails to adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he added.
Some Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Release
However, a segment of rightwing commentators and Trump allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a DOJ led by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are entirely redacted, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
But some are not, including high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of Clinton, especially, allowed some rightwing figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated conservative commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a woman that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Former President Campaign Issues Response
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no illegal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration hasn’t been hiding those files for months only to dump them at the last minute on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“This is about shielding themselves from what comes next, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the statement added.
Broader Conservative Comment Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was relatively subdued following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that came before the congressional approval to enact a bill requiring the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been among the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department generally and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were provided hard-copy binders of materials that contained little previously unseen data.
