Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle programs.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing these treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which examined 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the accelerated regain.
These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Condition?
The NHS suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Experiences
Users who have come off the medication describe a intense return of appetite.
"I experienced something flipping and you become starving," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle changes.
