A group of seven accused individuals of Germany's far-left organization face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost began their trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the moniker “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany claim the group was responsible for targeting locations in Germany and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. A pair of suspects, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists prior to the identical event in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., emerged as a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right Alternative for Germany applauded the American move and called on the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
